Structured data (JSON-LD): the fastest fix most websites are missing
Of the 8 things we check, structured data is the one we see missing most often on small business sites — and it's the one where fixing it makes the biggest difference for the least effort.
What it actually is
Structured data (specifically JSON-LD, the format search engines and AI systems both expect) is a small block of code on your page that states your facts directly, in a format a machine doesn't have to guess at. Instead of a system trying to infer "is this a restaurant, a law firm, or a blog post?" from your layout and wording, you tell it outright: this is a LocalBusiness, here's the name, here's the address, here's the opening hours.
It's invisible to a human visitor — nothing changes on the page you see — but it's one of the clearest, least ambiguous signals a machine can read. Where your body text requires interpretation, structured data requires none.
Why it's worth fixing first
It's a real 10 points in your audit score, it's usually a single block added once (not an ongoing content commitment like writing more copy), and because so few small business sites have any at all, adding it is one of the few fixes here that puts you ahead of most of your actual competitors, not just up to a baseline.
When our content-improvement feature suggests a structured-data fix, it drafts a real JSON-LD block using only facts already present on your page — never invented details — for you to review and add. If your audit shows this signal failing, scan your site and see exactly what's missing.
