What is AI-search readiness, and why should your website care?
For twenty years, being "found online" meant one thing: ranking well in a list of blue links. You optimised a page, Google crawled it, and if you did it right, a human clicked through to read it. That loop is still there — but it's no longer the only one.
A growing share of searches now get answered directly, by an AI system that reads several pages, pulls out the facts it needs, and writes a summary — sometimes with a link back to you, sometimes without. ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google's AI Overviews all work this way. Your page doesn't need to win a click anymore. It needs to be legible enough that a machine can lift the right facts out of it correctly.
Visible vs. legible
A page can be perfectly visible — indexed, ranking, getting traffic — and still be poor material for an AI system to extract from. Vague headings, a meta description that doesn't actually describe the page, no structured data telling a machine what kind of business you are, thin body content that never states your actual facts in plain sentences. None of that stops a human from finding you. All of it makes an AI system more likely to get you wrong, or skip you for a competitor who made its facts easier to find.
"AI-search readiness" is just a name for closing that gap: writing and structuring a page so both a person and a machine can tell, quickly and accurately, what it's about.
